Hydrolyzed Collagen: What is it?Collagen is an insoluble protein that is naturally found in the body and is responsible for giving the skin elasticity and for supporting joints and it is the primary protein found in connective tissues. It is basically the glue that holds the body together and gives it a frame. Collagen accounts for about a quarter of the protein found in the body. It is a familiar word in the cosmetic procedure industry as it is used frequently as a filler for facial wrinkles and as a lip plumper. Hydrolyzed collagen is a processed version that is made soluble. So, where does hydrolyzed collagen as a supplement come from? There are several sources, all of which are animal. The bovine and porcine (cow and pig) skins and bones are the most common sources of hydrolyzed collagen. But, before it can be used as a dietary supplement, the extracted collagen must be broken for easy digestion. Enzymes are used for this process and the final product is hydrolyzed collagen. Once it is turned into hydrolyzed collagen it is used in a variety of supplements and cosmetic products. As with so many elements of aging, collagen production begins to fall off and it does not replenish itself. When this happens, wrinkles form, skin sags, knees creak and joints hurt and supplementation becomes necessary to replace it. Hydrolyzed collagen does this for areas all over the body. As an additive to facial creams and lotions, it is then absorbed by the skin and replenishes lost collagen and improves skin volume. Hydrolyzed collagen, listed as HCP, is also used in nutritional food products to beef up the protein content. Along with hydrolyzed collagen, another common type of collagen is derived from poultry and is known and Chicken Collagen Type II. The chicken cartilage is ground up to extract the collagen. Along with protein, chicken type II also contains hyaluronic acid and glucosamine and chondroitin sulfates. There is also a new element called a Cartilage Matrix Glycoprotein that has shown to reduce inflammation in the joints. Like hydrolyzed collagen, these properties of the chicken type II make it a particularly beneficial supplement for the joints, with a minimum of 70% being easily absorbed in the joints and replenishing the collagen. Hydrolyzed collagen is an important supplement if for no other reason than to return lost collagen to the body. An added benefit is that once the collagen is replaced, the body returns to a more youthful state. Yes, as people age, they lose collagen- hence the popularity of collagen fillers for the face. But, that is not the only place where it is depleted and the only way to replace it is by taking a hydrolyzed collagen supplement. Because the hydrolyzed collagen is derived from bovine, porcine and chicken collagen type II, allergy testing may be necessary before use. But, because it is a biocompatible substance, serious side effects from the use of hydrolyzed collagen have not been reported. The body is able to readily absorb the hydrolyzed collagen which also means repeat treatments or regular supplements are necessary.
