SteviaStevia is a plant belonging to the Compositae family, growing about 80 cm in height, and native to the northwestern region of Paraguay in South America. Although there are more than 154 species in the genus Stevia, only Stevia Rebaudiana Bertoni , as discussed in "Stevia Rebaudiana Bertoni, the Plant", offers the sweet Stevia taste. According to historical records following their contact with European explorers, the Guarani tribes of Paraguay and Brazil used Stevia as a sweetener and medicinal tea as early as the mid 1500's. In "History of the Guarani Tribes and Herbal Remedies", there is evidence of the Guarani tribal existence centuries before the European explorers.The plant was originally documented by a Swiss botanist in the last 1890's, as referenced in "19the Century Stevia Research". With only limited research between then and the 1930's, the plant was used locally with little documented history associated, as evidenced in "The Early History of Stevia (Prior to 1970)". Then in the early 1970's, the first seeds were introduced in Japan and the plant was cultivated as an alternative to artificial sweeteners, as referenced in "Japanese History and Use of Stevia".
